Birmingham City F.C.

There are two professional football teams in the city of Birmingham. One is Birmingham City F.C. and the other is Aston Villa. Both play in the Premier League.

The origins of the club, like Aston Villa, lie in the the church. In fact the circumstances are very similar. What was originally a group of cricketers from Holy Church in Bordesley, looking to keep fit through the new sport of football, formed a club and called it the Small Heath Alliance in 1875.

Their first ground was at Muntz Street and the team did well. By 1885 they had turned professional and in 1905 they adopted the name of Birmingham F.C. The only variation in this name came in 1943 when the word city was added to the name of the club

In 1906 the club moved to its new site at St Andrew's where it is still situated today. The club chalked up major successes in the 1950's and 1960's and have always competed fiercely with Aston Villa who are still regarded as their rivals.

The club is nicknamed the Blues after their team colours and the clubs fans are referred to as Bluenoses.
