Thomas
Attwood, the son of Matthias and Ann Attwood, was born in Halesowen
in 1783. His father was a successful businessman who owned
coal and iron works in Halesowen.
Thomas
Attwood is famous for founding the Politcal Union in 1830. The Union
campaigned for cities such as Birmingham to be given direct
representation in parliament. The Reform Bill finally ensured the
success of direct representation and Attwood became Birmingham's first
MP in 1832.

Until
recently there was a statue of Thomas Attwood in Larches Green,
Sparkbrook. However it is currently in storage. Another statue can be
found on the steps of Chamberlain Square.
Thomas
Attwood died in March 1859.
