Cannock is
situated on the southern edge of Cannock Chase. It is a town in
Staffordshire in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The town has
its own traditional market and a mix of quality shopping outlets and
bars and cafes. It is one of the areas main attractions aside from
Cannock Chase. Hednesford,
Rugeley, Great Wyrley and Burntwood are nearby and it is approx 8 miles
to the south of Stafford. Cannock would have been a small rural
community until coal mining of the mid to late 19th century. Its
location near the Black Country ensured its prosperity as a town with
large coal reserves. The
population of Cannock has increased steadily before and after the
Second World War. It is a popular tourist attraction these days and
home to many commuters working in Birmingham ( only 20 miles away ) and
the surrounding towns and cities. Records
from the Domesday Book suggest that its name is derived from the Old
English cnocc which means small hill although this may be disputed. Famous people from Cannock include Stan Collymore, Steve Bull, Richard Gosling (Strongest Man in Britain). A lot of people in Cannock say 'Do Your Rip!!' To view more photographs on this topic please click
