The
New Art Gallery with an enviable retail park
and the Wharf 10 café-bar over-looking the canal
was opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 16th
February 2000. It is an exciting and architecturally
outstanding multimillion-pound landmark housing
the prestigious Garman Ryan collection as well
as works by artists as diverse as William Blake,
Van Gogh and Picasso. A variety of other displays
can be seen in particular work by the sculptor
Sir Jacob Epstein.
There is a complete floor dedicated to contemporary
and historic art. The New Art Gallery built
by the architects Caruso St John at a cost of
£21 million, is keen to provide an all-round
experience with something to suit the entire
family comprising activities for children, a
roof top restaurant, art library, and gift shop,
exhibitions and conferencing facilities.
