Welcome
to Shropshire
Shropshire
county used to be called Scorbbesbyrigscir, which literally
translated means Shrewsburyshire. Recorded in the Domesday
book the spelling was Sciropescire. The origin of the
name led to the county being called Salop in 1974. Local
residents however had different ideas and due to so
much criticism the county was renamed Shropshire just
six years later.
Shropshire
is a beautiful county with spectacular countryside and
a historical past. There is plenty to do and see here.
A relaxed and peaceful county within easy reach of the
West Midlands.
