The Sandwell Valley Park is a 1600 acre park in the centre of the West Midlands. Activities include walking, cycling, horse riding and farm visits. A mixture of lakes, woodland and grassland, two golf courses and an old anti-aircraft gun emplacement, Sandwell Valley Park is popular at the weekends with cyclists and ramblers.
There
are
organised walking groups and horseriding facilities at the park.
Details of these can be found at the end of this article. Route 5 of
the National Cycle Network actually runs through 3 miles of
the
Sandwell Valley Park. Paths around the park vary from tarmac pavements
to gravel and earth surfaces.
There
are
several lakes in and around the park. Forge Mill Lake is designed to
take water from the River Tame to avoid flooding. It is a popular place
for wildfowl and wading birds and there is a visitor centre operated by
the RSPB for those that wish to watch the wildlife.
Forge Mill Farm can be found near the lake along Forge Lane, near the car park to Forge Mill Lake. It is a working dairy farm that is open to the public and features a farm shop, playground and small animal area
Swan Pool is used by bird watchers, ramblers and horseriders. The Sandwell Valley Sailing Club operates from here and sailing and canoeing is a regular event at this lake. It is also popular with anglers.
The River Tame runs through the park and continues towards Birmingham. Sot's Hole on the western edge of Sandwell Valley with its main entrance off Dagger Lane features woodland that is hundreds of years old.
