Welcome
to Nottinghamshire
The
name Nottingham means 'settlement of Snot's people.
The letter S was dropped sometime in the past (thankfully)
when the Normans found it difficult to pronounce the
s and n together. Nottingham is one of Britain's oldest
settlements. Nottingham is rich in historic buildings
and museums. Nottingham castle with it's turbulent history
is now home to the City Museum and Art Gallery.
Any
mention of Nottinghamshire and the legend of Robin Hood
springs to mind. The remains of the once great Sherwood
Forest and the home of this heroic legend lie to the North
East. Nottingham was renowned for it's lace making, hosiery
and tobacco industry as well as cycle makers Raleigh who
prospered from in this county.
