Mumbles is situated just outside Swansea in the county of
Glamorganshire. It is often called Oystermouth after the parish
and there is a medieval church and castle. The worlds first passenger
train ran from Mumbles and Swansea in 1807 although it was a horse
drawn affair on rails.
Oystermouth Castle
is open to visitors and the castle grounds offers breathtaking views
across Swansea Bay. Most people from Wales have heard or know about the
Mumbles. Outsiders may never have heard of it. Its name is derived from
the French word 'mamelles' which means breasts. This originally
referred to the two islets but is now the name for the whole area.
With good seafront pubs and restaurants, shopping and excellent coastal views, Mumbles is a place that deserves a visit.
