The story started on January 15th 2004 on a Birmingham Message Forum. A person calling themselves Michael Pennington told an interesting tale about his murderous death in 1971 and subsequent life as a spirit in an old derelict boatyard. In recent times the building became occupied and the ghost found a way to communicate with the living using a computer.

The story was interesting because it gave an account from the perspective of a ghost. Over a few short weeks the writer continued his story, answering questions and giving an explanation for his existence and an account of a global mission here on earth.

What started as a friendly forum rapidly degenerated into a mixed crowd of followers of whom some were being entertained, others who were angered, frightened or addicted to the compelling account unfolding on the forum. Speculation and blame was placed on the site administrators, several of the visitors, outsiders and even the person who originally asked for a ghost story and probably got more than they bargained for. Michael Pennington is also reputed to have posted on other message forums. There are others who have posted and actively been involved in the plot. Speculation is that the students quarters of a lodging in Harborne, Birmingham, is where the IP address of many of the postings originate.

Equally as interesting is the mysterious [ name witheld ] or [ name witheld ] who waited until 1st April 2004 to decide to visit all the forums on which the story was posted and claims to have evidence and proof of a hoax.

Speculation continues to this day as to the motives and whereabouts of the illusive Pennington. The most likely explanation is the possible prelude to a book launch. Whatever the motives the warnings on the original web site make it quite clear that their belief is that the Michael Pennington postings are just a story. They emphasise strongly that the postings should be treated as nothing but a story and yet the simple fact that he claimed to be a ghost has been a cause for concern for many people.

This story can easily be dismissed as an elaborate hoax or just an interesting ghost story but the nature of the posts are haunting and Michael Pennington made some serious references to recent power cuts and links to other paranormal and supernatural phenomena which remain unresolved.

The Michael Pennington account or memoirs fall into two almost separate stories. The first part deals with life as a ghost, communication with the living, use of technology and the pursuit of the people that caused his untimely death in 1971. The second part which is much more controversial, deals with a global campaign by other spirits and humans who are working in unison to save the planet from possible extinction and invasion by an alien race. Both accounts are fragmented and both are incomplete due to the nature of the way in which the forums ended abruptly.

There is evidence to suggest that similar accounts are being posted elsewhere under different names and by other persons that resemble closely in style the writings of Michael Pennington.
