30th December 2003 IMAX Screen Closure - Update
Launched on September 29th 2001 the IMAX cinema has ceased trading due to lack of enthusiasm from West Midlands residents.
Elsewhere in Bradford, Belfast, Bristol, Bournemouth, Glasgow, Manchester and London the IMAX has been a success. Only the IMAX Cinema in Birmingham has suffered such low
attendance figures. With 100,000 visitors, just half of the number required to keep it open, it is no longer a viable concern. Hope remains that with the future development of Eastside IMAX may
re open its doors at a future date.
Well here it is at last, officially opened
on 29th September after 6 years. Where old
joins new and science comes to life. This
is a landmark for the people of Birmingham
to be proud of. Close to the city centre,
covering the size of six international football
pitches, Birmingham brings you
Millennium Point.
Millennium Point can be broken down into six key
areas. The complex itself which houses the THINK
TANK now one of country's largest museums offering
a journey through past, present and future, the
IMAX THEATRE consisting of 2D and 3D films, the
UNIVERSITY OF THE FIRST AGE taking youth on a
spectacular search for knowledge, the YOUNG PEOPLES
PARLIAMENT getting politicians to take notice
of Britain's young people,
the HUB which is the Millennium Point's centrepiece
for social gathering
with restaurants, offices for business and outdoor
gardens and the MILLENNIUM SQUARE which is a paved
area for outdoor events.
The Millenium Point website is now fully operational
and illustrates what is
on offer. It can be found at: www.millenniumpoint.org.uk
