Welcome to Liverpool

That fine city on the North Eastern side of the river Mersey is steeped in historical past. One of the finest and most well known sea ports in the world. A grand city. In it's prime it was a jewel in the British Isles.

The name Liverpool comes from a now defunct old English word livered which in itself means clotted. Liverpool therefore means clotted pool. The pool was a former tidal creek which has since been filled in. Hence we have Liverpudlian a native of Liverpool and Liver bird, which comes from the fanciful bird on the city arms crest.

Merseyside has more national museums than anywhere outside London. Liverpool is bidding to become the next European Capital of Culture in 2008 and visitors who remember the old run down Liverpool will be suprised to see what a vibrant and busy city this has once again become. Try taking a ferry across the Mersey to Wirral and see the Historic Warships.

There are plenty of attractions in and around Liverpool. Merseyside offers the best in music, sport, heritage and culture.
