The Ikon Gallery was originally founded by Angus Skene and four artists
from the Birmingham School of Art and the gallery is situated near
Broad Street in a Grade II listed building in Oozells Square, formerly
the site of Oozells Street Board School which was designed in 1877 by
John Chamberlain.
The gallery is open daily except Mondays
unless it is a bank holiday. The Ikon Gallery was designed to engage
the public in contemporary art. Education is a key part of the function
of the Ikon which provides informative displays and promotes artists.
Temporary
exhibitions take place on two floors of the building and the quality
and range of exhibits is diverse. All types of art are catered for here
and include photography, painting, sculpture, film and media.
There
is also a Spanish Restaurant within the Ikon which is a registered
charity, partly funded by Birmingham City Council and the Arts Council
of England. Corporate funding also provides additional funds.
