Now the county of Hereford and Worcester, the name Hereford means 'army ford'. This would indicate that at some time there must have been a ford where perhaps the Roman army would have crossed the river Wye. The old Roman road from Monmouth passed through here.

Resting between the Malvern hills and the Welsh border, Hereford itself is one of the old cathedral cities and home to the mappa mundi. The splendid norman cathedral is one of the main tourist attractions to the area. Herefordshire, very much still a farming county, has some breathtaking scenic beauty around the Wye Valley.
