Welcome to Cheshire

Chester, a Roman town, used to be called Legeceasterscir in the tenth century and Cestrescire in the eleventh century Domesday book. No exact record remains as to the true meaning of the Roman name other than it may have come from Castra Legionum - Fort of Legions.

The county town of Chester has been a cathedral city since 1541. The Chester visitor centre has a fabulous collection of 2000 years of the city's history. The walled city of Chester has a battle torn past. The largest Roman amphitheatre in the world has been excavated here.

Ellesmere port on the Mersey ensured that Chester , with its extensive canals was a major destination in it's day. In fact, the world's largest collection of such narrowboats and barges can be found in Ellesmere and the old docks which are now a boat museum all recreate the past industrial history of the region.
