The walled city of Chester has a battle torn past. The largest Roman amphitheatre in the world has been excavated here. Ellesmere port on the Mersey ensured that Chester , with its extensive canals was a major destination in it's day. In fact, the world's largest collection of such narrowboats and barges can be found in Ellesmere and the old docks which are now a boat museum all recreate the past industrial history of the region. |
