The Midlands Region

Rutland actually comes under Leicestershire although it is a ceremonial county and the local population prefer to retain the name of Rutland over that of Leicestershire. A similar situation exists with Hereford and Worcester. This is now the county of Hereford and Worcester although the boundaries are still defined by local ambitions to retain a separate identity.

The Midlands is often seen as a heavily industrialised region of the UK and whilst this is true with regard to the West Midlands, the Black Country and other prominent areas such as Leicester, Derby, Burton-Upon-Trent and Nottingham, it would be unfair to categorise the whole region under this common misconception.

In close proximity to the Midlands there exists a host of scenic, beautiful villages, countryside and varied landscapes. The Malverns and the Cotswolds are only a short car journey away from the West Midlands. Shropshire with its rolling hills and picturesque countryside is a world apart from the industrialised towns and cities nearby. Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds can claim to have some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK and receive large numbers of tourists from home and abroad.

Derbyshire is mainly rural and is well known for the Peak District and the South Pennines. Within this counties section we have also included Cheshire, Merseyside and Gloucestershire. All are within easy reach of the Midlands region and we will endeavour to add additional information as we add more content to these sections of our web site.
