Instructions on how to use your new Birmingham UK Com account

We no longer opening any new hosting accounts but this information may be useful to you.

SETTING UP YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT

Basically all you do is create a new account in your Outlook or similar email program. Outlook has a new account wizard that guides you through the process. When you get to the mail settings you will use mail.yourdomainname.co.uk (use your own domain name) for your incoming mail (POP3) and your normal ISP details for you outgoing mail (SMTP).

When asked for the user details and password you will enter the details that will have been given for this domain name. This will be your Account Name (User name) and Password.

USING AN FTP PROGRAM DIRECTLY

If you are experienced at using an FTP program then you can just ftp straight into your new account. Your ftp site address is your domain name and your user ID and password will be required. When you enter your account for the first time you should see a folder called web. Move up to the highest level of your domain by using the up arrow until you see details of your top level web folder containing the folders logs, users, web and certs. The web folder is the folder into which you will upload your new web site. Do not use the user folder or any of the other sub folders in your home site. It won't do any harm if you do but they won't work on your main domain name.

An excellent and free FTP program can be obtained from:

www.smartftp.com

CGI BIN

If you have ordered a cgi bin you will also see this in the list of folders. Remember when loading up cgi files you should generally set permissions to 755. Getting this wrong is the most common cause of failed cgi files.

TRANSFER OF DOMAIN NAME

If you are happy with the company that you purchased your domain name from then just follow the instructions above because what follows is the hardest route and sometimes the most frustrating depending on the level of service of your registrant (domain name provider). It is also worth mentioning at this point that some registrants charge hefty transfer fees particularly if your domain name was purchased cheaply at what probably seemed a very good deal at the time.

For details on transfering a domain name over to the Birmingham UK Hosting services you should take a look at the transfer instructions which can be found at: transfer.htm

The IPS tag should be changed to HOST EUROPE.

To check your domain name to see if the update has been carried out you can use a look up service such as the one at:

http://www.birminghamuk.com/cgi-bin/acewhois.cgi

Before the transfer the look up will show your current nameservers. Here is an example of one ( your own will be different ).

Domain servers in listed order:
NS.WEBFUSION.CO.UK 212.67.202.1
NS2.WEBFUSION.CO.UK 212.67.203.240

After your domain name has been transfered successfully your nameservers will appear as follows:

Domain servers listed in order:
NS.BIRMINGHAMUKSHOPPING.CO.UK 217.199.165.186
NS2.BIRMINGHAMUKSHOPPING.CO.UK 217.199.165.187

Once this has happened your account should be up and running. Many people ask how long this takes. The fact is that it should only take a couple of days. In reality and depending on the level of support from your registrant this can be a very frustrating process that has been known to take weeks particularly if you are dealing with a company the other side of the atlantic that wants you to fax ID and all manner of documentation.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I BOUGHT MY DOMAIN FROM go2wm or Birmingham UK Com AND WANT TO TRANSFER IT?

Rest assured there are no transfer fees. You can move your account at any time free of charge, you have full control over your nameservers, you can add 100 unique email addresses, submit your web site for free to 10 search engines, use cloaked or uncloaked web page forwarding. Now there's a refreshing change !

You have been allocated a new account as per your order and stated requirements. If this included a domain name purchase please allow 24 - 48 hours for your web site to be updated and become live. When you first type in the internet address of your domain name you will see a holding page. This confirms that everything is working properly. All that you now need to do is upload all your web pages to your account on the server.

There is one thing you need to do first. Please reply to this email using the address that you would like your password details sent to. We need this confirmation to avoid sending your login details to the wrong party. Once this has been confirmed your account details will be forwarded to you.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

1) First and foremost never give your account login details to anyone. We will NOT ask you for this information.

2) Birmingham UK Com provides cost effective hosting below that of similar prices in the open market place for services with a top performing quality provider. If you want cheap hosting, slow downloads and unreliable service please go elsewhere.

3) You are using a service supplied by Birmingham UK Com. This service is for the member companies of go2wm, Birmingham UK Com, partners, affiliates and their customers. If your account has been provided by a go2wm member, affiliate service or partner of Birmingham UK Com who is designing your web site, then most of the information here will be irrelevant to you as the member is probably doing the web design work and uploading your files for you.

You will need to seek confirmation with the member as to whether regular back up of your files is included in the price quoted. Although we back up the files on the server on a regular basis we do not accept responsibility for loss of files on your account. This is in part why our service is so cost effective. However, should you need a back up due to unforseen circumstances we will be pleased to restore your files for you at a minimum cost.

If you are the person operating the account and uploading the files you should keep copies on your hard drive and preferably make regular back up to disc.

4) Unless otherwise stated your hosting service charge is renewable annually. If you change your email address or contact details you must let us know. Accounts remaining unpaid for 30 days or more will be removed.

5) Make a note of the date of purchase of your domain name and when it is renewable. This is your responsibility to ensure that your domain name does not lapse. Every day around the world thousands of domain names change hands because someone has forgotten to renew and often ommitted to inform their registrant of changes of email or address details. You would be suprised to find how many of these are large corporations. Getting them back can be expensive and sometimes impossible if they have been snapped up and re sold !

USEFUL INFORMATION

Once you have your web site up and running please don't make the most common mistake of all time. Setting up a web site and waiting for the business to roll in seldom happens. You need to let people know where you are in the same way that you would need to let people know where your company address is. For more information on this take a look at:
