Bideford is a working port alongside the tidal River Torridge and
Torridge estuary. It is also a market town. The cargo ships and fishing
boats are in evidence and at low tide half submerged or abandoned craft
can be seen along the banks.

The two bridges
shown here cannot fail to be noticed by visitors to Bideford. Whilst
the river can look quite depressing and muddy at certain times this is
a picturesque town with a thriving business community as well as being
a resort visited by tourists throughout the year.
Bideford is in
North Devon. The Author Charles Kingsley wrote his novel Westward Ho at
Bideford. Whilst Bideford is now easily missed due to the new bridge
crossing the Torridge, it is still worth a good look around and has a
good number of interesting side streets and local traders plying their
wares from small shops.
In the 16th century
Bideford was Britain's third largest port. Trips to the nearby Lundy
Island in the Bristol Channel leave from Bideford and tourists can take
a fishing trip from the port.
The Pannier Market is on Tuesdays and Saturdays all year round and is a
covered market. There is also an open air market on Wednesdays but this
is in the Summer only.
